What to Expect

It is very normal to feel nervous or hesitant about meeting with a therapist for the first time.
For some people, being aware of what to expect at therapy sessions helps to alleviate some of these feelings.

What can I expect from our first session?

 During our initial consultation, I will ask you to tell me about yourself and what issues have brought you to therapy. I will also ask you about your relationships and background, prior experience with counselling and what you hope to achieve from our therapy sessions. This initial conversation will also provide you with the opportunity to ask me any questions you may have about the therapy process.

 By the end of the consultation, I will be able to offer you some initial impressions of what our work might include. At that point, we will discuss your treatment goals and create an initial treatment plan. You should evaluate this information and make your own assessment about whether you feel comfortable working with me.

 An additional goal of the first meeting is to determine fit – in the event that your needs would be better met in a different treatment setting, appropriate referral options will be provided and discussed.

How often will we meet?

 Sessions are 50 minutes in duration and we will meet together bi-weekly, weekly or bi-monthly depending on your needs and what stage of the treatment process we are in.

When should I expect to see improvements?

Each person and situation are unique. What you expect to achieve through therapy will be clearly defined as we begin our work together. We will discuss realistic time frames for reaching your goals and agree on how we will measure your progress. Generally speaking, six to eight months of regular counselling/psychotherapy will lead to a resolution or significant reduction of symptoms.

Psychodynamic psychotherapy is best considered as a long-term treatment involving considerable commitment for both patient and therapist.
